HYMNS OF MEDITATION IN THE MIDST OF PESTILENCE
It should come as no surprise that the greatest and most prolific hymn writing came during times of tribulation, most especially during plagues. When an invisible enemy puts to death half your city, or even half of Europe, you are bound to look to heaven for answers. Deep contemplations of life and death, judgment and mercy follow. The Holy Spirit uses such trials to refine us, purging the flesh of its desires, and filling us with God’s grace, our only lasting hope. Join us on our Lenten Wednesday services at 7:00 p.m. as we reflect on five hymns, most of which were written in the context of a plague.
